Watch: Alice Adams 1935 123movies, Full Movie Online – In the small town of South Renford, Alice Adams comes from a working class background, although she aspires to be among the upper class. Alice’s mother blames her husband for their low social standing, despite his working hard and Alice not blaming him for anything. Regardless, Alice tries to do whatever necessary to put on appearances of wealth and social standing, despite everyone in that class in town knowing who she is, and thus largely ignoring her because of her false airs. First meeting at a society ball, Alice surprisingly catches the eye of Arthur Russell, surprisingly as he purportedly is engaged to débutante Mildred Palmer. As Alice continues to hide her true social standing from Arthur as he courts her, Mrs. Adams pressures Mr. Adams into doing something he doesn’t want to do in an effort truly to become part of the business class, that measure which entails sinking all his money into a business venture. Beyond the time when Arthur finds out the true nature behind Alice’s facade, other issues may bring the fragile Adams society house of cards tumbling down around them, and thus the happiness Alice is seeking with Arthur..
Plot: In the lower-middle-class Adams family, father and son are happy to work in a drugstore, but mother and daughter Alice try every possible social-climbing stratagem despite snubs and embarrassment. When Alice finally meets her dream man Arthur, mother nags father into a risky business venture and plans to impress Alice’s beau with an “upscale” family dinner. Will the excruciating results drive Arthur away?

“Isn’t it funny how things work out? I’ve seen it happen in other people’s lives…and now it’s happened in ours.”
A five-and-ten girl from a struggling family longs to be part of the town’s upper-crust social whirl. Booth Tarkington’s fluttery, sweetly scared, post-schoolgirl heroine Alice Adams provides a young Katharine Hepburn with one of her greatest screen characters. Despite already winning an Oscar for 1933’s “Morning Glory” (and topping that performance the same year as Jo in “Little Women”), talkative and fearfully direct Alice affords Hepburn the opportunity to display her innate grace as never before–and director George Stevens is smart to stay out of her way. When Hepburn speaks about being so ‘sadly happy’ to beau Fred MacMurray, or when desperately trying to keep up the conversation during a wildly unsuccessful dinner, she is transcendent as a motion picture actress. More amazing than this, “Alice Adams” as a film is not a one-woman show, and Fred Stone gives just about the most letter-perfect performance I’ve ever seen as the much-put upon Mr. Adams. A former vaudeville entertainer in real-life, Stone is the consummate actor: natural, sympathetic, ornery and child-like–but also a softy–his is a performance worthy of an Oscar (he might have earned a Supporting Actor statue had such a category been included for 1935). MacMurray is the weak link in the cast (he’s far too juvenile to be a convincing suitor for Alice, although his final scene is well done), however Frank Albertson is terrific as Alice’s brother and Hattie McDaniel(s) has a riotous scene serving the family dinner. The film’s view of a needy (but not cloying) outsider is keenly balanced in tone between an error-laden comedy and a sensitive character study, and though the small town milieu is dated, the family’s desire for a better life rings true today. Stevens really stacks the deck against our Alice (even her carriage to the dance has wobbly wheels), and a subplot concerning a glue formula could have used a bit more consideration. Still, it’s a lovely, entertaining film, with the work of both Hepburn and Stone nearly enough to make it a classic. ***1/2 from ****
