Reviews:

Captures the moods…
While certainly the vanities and indiscretions of upper crust Russia is examined by Tolstoy and it has been some time since I have read the lengthy novel, this version is certainly more memorable and effective than the Garbo version. I do agree with an earlier review in that Garbo herself, perhaps a bit too self-possessed and headstrong, could never represent the character of Anna, a woman carried away on passion, lust and impending tragedy.

Vivien Leigh is stunning in her facial expressions and vulnerable, almost exotic appearance, as we see her in a black gown, contrasted dramatically with other women who blend in the background to obscurity. The gowns and architecture of the era, the stark coldness and added texture of snowflakes, as a bas-relief to the portrait of Anna. Her close-ups particularly as she is in the train station in winter, foreshadowing her eventual fate.

Overall a beautiful film which is well worth viewing. Leigh is beautiful and tragic. 8/10.

“Why not turn out the lights…when there’s nothing more to be seen?”
Seeing a poll come up on ICM for the best films of 1948,I started trying to find what Julien Duvivier had made that year, and saw listed an adaptation of Anna Karenina. Attempting to find it,I was surprised to not see any sign of it from online,or DVD sellers. While looking for info online,I noticed a pic of an official Fox DVD of the film, which led to me getting set to meet Anna Karenina.

View on the film:

Making his lone British movie as a favor to producer Alexander Korda,co-writer/(with Jean Anouilh and Guy Morgan) director Julien Duvivier brings his auteur Film Noir styling across the pond, tracking Karenina’s life going off the rails with pelts of rain striking the windows, and the ceilings shining with a heavenly light above them.

Working within the Hays Code rules, Duvivier smartly uses the limitations to continue building on themes across his work, with close-ups in separate beds highlighting the disconnection Karenina has with everyone, and the need to punish those who did not follow by the Hays Code morals, allowing Duvivier to revisit the cloudy nightmare motifs of The Phantom Wagon, that in a shockingly unflinching ending, end up running over her life.

Facing Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel, the screenplay by Duvivier/ Morgan & Anouilh impressively keeps everything earthy, with the disintegration of the romance between Karenina and Alexei Karenin having an excellent brittleness. Whilst doing well at exploring the increasing isolation of their lead, the writers never fully go into the emotional depth that appears to be on offer for any of the men in Karenina’s life.

Joined by a fittingly gruff Ralph Richardson as Karenin, Vivien Leigh gives a refined performance as Karenina, whose regal voice (most of the cast wisely don’t try to do fake accents) Leigh pins with an expressive, raw nerve of vulnerability from blood on the tracks.
