Reviews:

Powerful “French Philadelphia” that the young generation must see
I am already used to roughness of the movies with historical/documentary flavor, so its understood from the beginning that the story will be imperfect, often fragmented, illogical, etc, and often I avoid watching it. But the story about horrible illness called AIDS that shocked the human kind in the second half of 1980s and early 1990s cannot be indeed told in any other way. I belong to the generation that luckily got informed about the horrors of unprotected sec just a couple of years before we started really engaging in it. However, people who were just 4-5 older, were not that lucky. Many of them got infected through unprotected sexual intercourse or hospital blood transfusions, and many of them transmitted that to their children, not knowingly. The stigma that was going about that illness as a disease of purely homosexuals, was one of the most shameful propaganda that was projected on sick people ever.

The film is brutally, non-apologetically, addressing the destiny of those ones who took an active stand in struggle for better medicine, and raising awareness as a piece of hope, a French activist group ACT UP. Most of them knew that their days were limited, but what is especially striking is that most of them are so young, almost teenagers. I like that film shows intellectual and professional as much as political debates among the activists as a part of fighting aids. Its also refreshing to see their flash-mob actions, fake-blood throwing, drawing attention. It is so refreshing to see the activism that existed before Facebook activism, its full of life and conviction.

Some of people here complain that the main flaw of the film is not showing that the activist group ACT UP achieved any concrete goal in the fight with a pharmaceutical lab, which was the main target in the course of the film. The story is indeed ending up at certain point at a very personal dealing with losing one member of the group, and a personal story about love, support and caring. However, this is a wrong criticism of the movie. Whoever dealt with the first wave of deaths from AIDS and all stigma that was going around it, knows very well that coming out of a shadow and human compassion and support was the main and only victory that the AIDS patients were craving for. Understanding of friends and family, group support, raising awareness in public, prevention from spreading disease, these were the only real goals they could go for and fight for. The fight with medical establishment is necessary, but mostly in vain, and we know that from the beginning of the film.

I like how this film was shot, and I like certain “lose treatment” of the supporting characters, who are all the time in the background, and who do not interfere with the main storyline between two activists who are a couple. This private story was quite enough to tell all most relevant points of the horrors of AIDS, in indirect but still remarkable and unforgettable ways.
