This was outstanding. Opera could very much be a metaphor for film to me, and the great way that opera dominates the life of addict Jules here could easily apply to me in my approach to film, and ANY remarkable actress of today.

For example, if I could travel back in time, I would easily have felt this way about Garbo, who is my favourite actress ever…

Probably the best thing Luc Besson ever laid his hands on…

Despite the ridiculous premise, namely the idea of Taiwanese gangster trying to get a hold of a bootleg recording of an opera singer (to blackmail her to signing a contract with them), the movie is better than I thought it would be going in.

There are a couple big downsides that keeps me from giving it a higher rating. One is that this opera singer (Cynthia) finds solace with a young postman (Jules) who is pretty much a stalker (who stole her dress after a performance). The other bigger issue, is one dubious hero is a child predator who has a girl, easily only 13-14 years old, living with him. They don’t explicitly show a sexual relationship but it’s implied. I know this is France in the early 80s, just made me uncomfortable.

Still, some decent scenes, one a chase through Paris and the Metro, that makes it worthwhile and oddly, the relationship between Jules and Cynthia still works in spite of how they meet.

Also noteworthy is the beautiful cinematography, some wonderful images. **3.5/5**

really slick
This is a very odd and stylized film that I really liked. Now I don’t generally go for a lot of “artsy-fartsy” stuff in movies, but this movie gave us both opera and the early 80s New Wave and managed to keep my attention. This is especially unusual since I generally like neither! The story is about a strange young man who snuck into an opera with a hidden tape recorder to copy the beautiful voice of a diva who has consistently refused to have her voice recorded. However, instead of getting in trouble with who you’d expect, he is pulled into a world of really freaky looking hit men! The bald guy with the radio (or is a hearing aid?) in his ear is just creepy! This is an extremely beautiful and well-crafted piece. Considering I first saw it when I was a teenager, it is amazing that I was this intrigued by any foreign movie. Now that I am “old” (my students at school tell me so), I can see how this movie helped spur my interest in international cinema.

UPDATE: I saw and reviewed this movie long ago. I watched the movie tonight and was a bit less thrilled with the movie. One big reason was that when I first watched the movie, I didn’t realize that one of the characters (the man with the Asian girlfriend) was a pedophile! Additionally, I also realized that NO ONE in the film was very likable apart from the opera star, though her character was problematic because her actions occasionally made no sense at all. Still, it is a very unique and enjoyable film…albeit a creepier one that I first noticed.
