This film officially releases on Friday, but my local Cineplex had an early showing that I took advantage of.

I must say that this film actually exceeded my expectations. This trailer didn’t come across as very emotional, but it turned out to be quite the opposite. There were a lot of offsetting funny and serious parts throughout with just enough emotional tension to finish the film off as expected.

I liked Channing Tatum here because he was able to express those funny and serious tones with his interactions coming mainly between himself and the dog, Lulu. The few interactions he had with people were spot on. Some military humour was thrown in there that not everyone found tasteful, but I found hilarious.

Although it had a military vibe to it. I don’t think one would have to support the military to enjoy this one. If you care about dogs, and especially dogs finding their place in one’s life and vice-versa, then I would definitely recommend giving this one a try.

I thought it was longer, but 90 minutes was perfect timing for the film. Although some of the fluff pieces felt just that. Fluff. I would’ve liked to have seen more silent, emotional moments such as flashbacks to show background to the trauma, but overall the film had good pacing and the story was told in its structured setting.

Overall, truly a good film that I came out of emotionally touched and happy to have seen. Good acting by Channing Tatum and the story was relatable and enjoyable.

Man’s best friend.
Leaving the cinema after seeing Death on the Nile (2022-also reviewed) I noticed a poster had been put up that looked like it was for a Hallmark-style movie. A few days later,I noticed a number of reviews praising the title, which led to me deciding to visit man’s best friend.

Returning to live action movies for the first time in five years, Channing Tatum teams up with co-writer/ (with Brett Rodriguez) Reid Carolin in both of them making their co-directing debut, which departs from the lively antics of Tatum’s Action/Comedy movies, for a wonderfully unexpected Road Movie atmosphere.

Joined by The Usual Suspects (1995-also reviewed) cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel & backed by a Folk-tinge score from Thomas Newman, the co-directors follow Briggs and the dog down shining wide-shots across the long road, going to warm close-ups of Briggs developing a bond with the dog.

Spending long passages of the film where he is the only person on screen, Channing Tatum successfully carries the film,with Tatum expressing in the quiet moments Briggs PTSD trauma, which Tatum keeps at the front of Briggs mind, even in the push-pull comedy moments with cute dog Lulu.

Meeting Briggs and Lulu down the road, Kevin Nash and Bill Burr bring a welcome shot of wackiness to proceedings as gun nut Gus and a Boston cop, while the screenplay by Rodriguez and Carolin walks off-beat comedy sequences, (such as Briggs pretending to be blind with a guide dog in order to get a hotel room) with an indie character drama of Briggs and Lulu (both suffering from PTSD) bonding as they go down the long road.
