For a tiny low budget flim coming out in 2020, Year of the Plague, with an AmazonPrime cover art that is just a random picture of the Randy in question with “Finding Randy” overlaid on it, I was taken aback at how neat this little film actually is.
Randy returns home to meet up with some old friends, one of whom is recording the events. They go out to the woods to dig up a time capsule they all buried years earlier in high school or something. Randy separates from the group in the woods and abruptly disappears. Days go by without any news from him, except text messages from his phone that just read “I’m okay” repeatedly.
What ensues is a stunningly compelling mystery as his friends grapple with the gradual realization that Randy isn’t okay, and that something is seriously wrong, no matter how much evidence seems to pop up that Randy is okay and alive. The tone of the film is such that it’s unclear whether the end result will be something mundane, nefarious, or supernatural.
I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery, though for me, the ending did not seem to make much sense. I’m a fan of stories which explain as little as possible, although this one could have done with some more explaining. Regardless, it was a fun film. It had some problems, namely in the acting. Several of the actors, in particular the actor for Vicki, were really bad, like high school intro to drama-level bad.
Finding Randy: Losing Interest.
If you are looking for a dull, insipid, completely uninteresting “found footage” movies about twenty-somethings, and how they know the title character, then this movie is for you. Although it is featured as a horror movie on Amazon Prime, it is actually a character study on self-absorbed dullards.
Randy is basically a cretin who cheats on every girl that he’s ever dated. One of his friends, Trevor, is endlessly fascinated by Randy, and is obsessed with video-documenting Randy’s homecoming. Along the way, Randy goes missing, and his friends become determined to find him. Their endeavors are interspersed with short clips, “interviews” with people who knew Randy, and they are all asked the same question by Trevor; “What do you like about Randy?”. The responses range from amiable to completely disinterested.
Our intrepid amateur investigators become determined to discover Randy’s fate after they decide that texts and a blog being put out by Randy have been faked. They then determine that they are being watched by a mysterious someone.
I can’t tell you what happens past that point, as I had become entirely bored, utterly disinterested in whatever happened to Randy, and fell asleep about halfway through the movie. If you need a non-pharmaceutical answer to insomnia, this is it.
