Since I already watched the first film last month, decided in celebration of the day, re-watched Part 2 and still highly entertaining though pretty tame by today’s standards. Thought the cast was also a bit better than the first. Still has scenes that make little sense (how exactly did Jason find Alice?) but was fun nevertheless. **3.75/5**

You’d have thought that after the antics of “Jason” first time around, the last thing anyone with a brain would want to do is open a new camp next door to that site! Well, yes – a mere five years later that’s precisely what happens. A camp for trainee counsellors is established and it isn’t long before there are a few too many meals going begging at the end of the day. Could “Jason” have survived? Is he back on his murderous trail again? Well sadly, that is the extent of the jeopardy here as the story now falls rather neatly into some rather predictable tram lines with a before, middle and ending – except the latter is clearly just a comma, rather than a full stop. The jump moments might have been more effective had the cast been more convincing, but all the yelling and hysteria – even in the dark and eerie woods – fails to engender any sense of peril, It’s just annoying and the score from Harry Manfredi doesn’t really help much either. Betsy Palmer reprises her role as “Mrs Voorhees” as does Adrienne King as “Alice” but they don’t really add much and by the midpoint I was bored. This is just a sequel nobody really needed.

“These kids smoke better dope than I do.”
The first Friday the 13th sequel follows the formula with more camp counselors showing up at Camp Crystal Lake and being slaughtered one by one. This is the first of the series where Jason is the killer, although he doesn’t yet have his iconic hockey mask. He wears a sack over his head instead. He also gets kicked in the nads. Pretty funny, honestly.

The cast is full of young actors playing obnoxious teens and twenty-somethings. Adrienne King briefly reprises her role from the first film before Amy Steel takes over as the ‘final girl.’ Acting-wise, Steel’s an improvement I think. This one also has more cute girls than the first movie and more nudity, which would become a prerequisite for the series. The tracking shot of Kirsten Baker’s rear end as she walks through the woods is priceless. As with the first movie, I really liked the locations they filmed at. Gives an authentic atmosphere to the film without appearing cheap, like most of today’s low-budget horror films do. If you like old-school slashers, you’ll like this one. It’s solid entertainment that you don’t have to take seriously, despite the macabre subject matter.

A solid sequel that keeps the best elements of the original and builds on them
In an opening sequence, set months after the original film we see sole survivor, Alice Hardy, having nightmares about the events at Camp Crystal Lake before being murdered. The action moves forward five years and a new camp has opened up on the shore of Crystal Lake. The events involving Jason and his mother have passed into folklore with rumours that Jason still stalks the woods in the area. As the new councillors arrive they talk about Jason but nobody is really concerned; some even want to walk the short distance to the old camp. Inevitably it isn’t long before the murders start again; although the campers don’t immediately realise that they are being picked off one by one.

If you enjoyed the original film then this is certainly one to watch. It opens well with its reminder of what went before followed by the surprising death of Alice. Things then slow down a bit as the new characters are introduced; while none of them are killed till around the film’s half way point they are some scares as we are fooled into thinking one or more characters could be attacked… there are also a couple of murders involving side characters. Once things really kick off the tension quickly rises as the killer starts killing the young councillors. These murders are quite shocking but not excessively gory. The cast might have been picked because they look good in short shorts and tight tops but they do well enough and look genuinely scared when they are meant to. Amy Steel does stand out as Ginny Field. Overall I’d say that if you were a fan of the original film you should watch this; if you didn’t like the original you are unlikely to want to watch this.
