Great watch, will watch again, and can recommend.

I’ve been a big Michelle Trachtenberg fan since “Harriett the Spy”, and I’m a nerd for science so mixing the two together makes a minimal good watch for me: it would have been hard for them to ruin this for me.

The premise feels weak as it’s a “coming of age” story with a focus in the physics of figurine skating, but the execution is wonderful. Kim Cattrall, Hayden Panettiere and the other skaters all embody the insanity of the ice skating culture and establish the world that Michelle Tratchenburg and Joan Cusack’s characters are forced to deal with.

In the end it becomes a story of passions (clearly stated in the movie) and really feels uplifting and inspiring despite the absurdity of the situations.

I know that when I throw this on, I’m going to enjoy a movie.

‘Ice Princess’ is good. Nothing more, nothing less.

There are enjoyable performances from Michelle Trachtenberg (Casey), Hayden Panettiere (Gen), Kim Cattrall (Tina) and Joan Cusack (Joan – creative!). Even if the latter two’s characters are irritating at times, but that is intentional to be fair. There’s also an appearance for Erik King, which I guess you could say was a “Surprise!” …

Props are in order for Christophe Beck, who I thought did a top job with the music – all of which suited events very well. The premise, which entails figure skating, is entertaining enough to see unfold. It’s nothing special, but is certainly a harmless and fine production from 2005.

Old pros “rock”
I’m going to “skate” over some of the more obvious flaws… Yes, Casey’s physics project is laughable. Yes, the message — that talent and independent spirit will shine, and that parents and children must respect each other’s dreams — is hackneyed. Sure, this is a feel-good movie aimed at tweens. But here’s an ugly secret: Many an emotionally arrested adult derives guilty pleasure from these perky underdog flicks.

The compelling reason to watch IP, however, is two old (sorry, older) pros — and one up-and-comer. We all knew Joan Cusack could act (indeed she’s one of our top comedic thespians), but who knew she could believably play an initially unsympathetic tight-assed “Type A” mom? And Kim Cattrall portrays the conniving Tonya Harding-esquire bitch (with the requisite heart of gold) admirably. Watching these two pros interact is quite the treat: Note how expressive their faces are, even when delivering (or reacting to) dialogue that skates on thin ice indeed.

Michelle Trachtenberg makes a appealing protagonist, but the revelation is Hayden Panettiere who perfectly embodies (both physically and psychologically) the driven golden girl (with that requisite heart of gold, natch). She cemented her status as a young actress to watch in Bring It On 3 (yet another perky, underrated underdog flick… that almost matched the cutes of the original). Additional kudos to the energetic monsters who portray the Jumping Shrimp and Zoe the punker pincushion who skates to Pink.

Hardly a gold medalist, and admittedly formulaic, but certainly deserving of better reviews than it received upon release. Watch those three (well, five) gals go at it and you’ll agree.

An Icy Message for Snow White and Cinderella
Talk about timing. Three days after Harvard’s faculty gave President Lawrence Summers a no confidence vote for saying women lack the “innate ability” to do well in math and science – Disney releases a movie about a girl who must choose between a physics scholarship from Harvard or life as a beautiful Ice Princess!

It’s sad that Disney would even raise such a question when countless women from high school valedictorian Cindy Crawford to Yale grad Jodie Foster have shown it’s possible to have both brains and beauty. Instead – the studio should encourage its target audience of preteen girls to study math and science. Researchers at the University of North Carolina found girls did better in math until age 11. Afterwards cultural conditioning forces them to choose between being popular and pretty or smart and nerdy.

The film does follow the classic Disney princess formula – poor young maiden with a heart of gold rebels against her strict mother by running away into the woods. There she meets the wicked witch and Prince Charming.

In this case, nearly friendless physics whiz Casey Carlyle ventures into the skating rink for a scholarship project. There she meets the wicked stepmother, ice queen Tina Harwood (Kim Cattrall). Since Casey loves to skate but has no money, she soon finds herself doing Cinderella-type chores like running the rink’s concession stand while squeezing in cross training with weights and ballet. This leaves little time for studies and puts her in conflict with her vegetarian professor mother (Joan Cusak), who dreams of sending her daughter to Harvard.

That sets up the inevitable question – will Casey choose Harvard and her mother or skating and her surrogate mother – or can she do both?

To its credit, Ice Princess does have many heart warming moments, mainly due to the comedic and dramatic talent of rising star Michelle Trachtenberg. And the big pop score by Radio Disney types like Jesse McCartney and Diana DeGarmo keep things bright.
