Inheriting the hunt
Misfortune was directed by Desmond Devenish, written by Devenish and Xander Bailey, and stars both Devenish and Bailey, as well as Jenna Kanell, Kevin Gage, Nick Mancuso, and Steve Earle. It follows a young man who learns of his father’s killer’s parole as he hunts down what his father was killed for, and the man who did it to avenge his father.

Plotting resembles several other revenge-based movies, but has the added benefit of time spent showing the reason why, instead of it being told to the audience. After a diamond heist, Roman (Mancuso) meets with the planner, Mallick (Gage); but Jim (Earle) has told Roman that Mallick that he slept with his wife, so they draw on each other and Roman is mortally wounded. Before his death he calls his son Boyd (Devenish) and tells him what he needed to know. In the time since his father was killed Boyd has gotten a house with girlfriend Sloan (Kanell), but is struggling. Mallick is arrested and eventually paroled, where Boyd learns of it through Jim and meets with Russell (Bailey), his old friend to get a gun. After Mallick makes his presence known Boyd, Russell, and Sloan set out to profit from revenge.

Characters are barely above average in their depth and traits. Boyd is sympathetic but unoriginal; he lost his parents and is left to fend for himself, just barely skirting by in life. Sloan is a thoroughly average character. She stands by Boyd’s side and acts as the voice of reason when he threatens to destroy the last remnants of his life with his lust for vengeance. Russell is closer to Boyd, in that he is more understanding and has a stronger bond with Boyd, having known him for longer. He still does not condone Boyd’s plan, but will help him see it through. Oddly, these characters dislike each other for some reason that never gets explained. Mallick is decent, acting more like an animal toying with its prey by “checking in” on Boyd as soon as he is paroled and by interacting with Russell without his knowledge of who Mallick is. Performances are mostly mixed; Devenish shows too little visible emotion which lets Bailey and Kanell outshine him. It’s the ever-reliable Gage that lifts off the screen, being no stranger to these types of characters, his growl, imposing presence and menacing delivery giving the movie a character it desperately needed. It’s a shame he was not utilized more.

Drama is weakly done, with just about every important beat in the movie being played out in hundreds of other movies with the same or similar plot. Core messages to the effect of still being able to lose something even when everything seems lost and the ends of a plan being worth the danger that it comes with are passably presented. The focus is on the reactions of three different people to the same circumstance, though they all bounce back and forth between viewpoints. However, these switches in perspective come up frequently and make it hard for the movie itself to present scenes of deliberation about the aforementioned issue with any degree of consistency.

Technically the movie is up to par on most aspects. What deserves commendation is the cinematography. There are plenty of good looking shots in the movie, with a lot of wides which helps to play up the sparsely populated and arid climate of Arizona. Some drawbacks are present though, with innumerable closeups on Boyd’s face that show him with the same two facial expressions each time; and the few action scenes that exist feel entirely second unit. Lighting fares the same way, with a mostly competent presentation with some obvious moments of budgetary related restrictions. Sound is square with little to point out.

Misfortune is a watchable crime/drama that does not stray far from other movies of the ilk, for better and worse. As a movie it does entertain but never enthralls due to a middling central performance, ping-ponging attitudes, and standard writing. Thankfully Bailey and Kanell do fine with what they were given, and as per usual, Kevin Gage steals the show, if not the diamonds.

Lead actor was the worst actor!!
Desmond was the worst actor in this movie. Plot was great, other actors were great, Desmond was awful (you can tell it was him money making the movie). If I watched one more shot of him up close trying to act dramatic I would of throw up. Did I mention his bad acting and tiresome up close shots of him trying to be dramatic? A positive note, all other actors were awesome and the fact that the film is based in Arizona and filmed in Arizona is awesome. 2 star at best.
