Not as bad as people have written……….give it a chance
To be honest I quite enjoyed this film, OK its not a laugh out loud all the time comedy but it does have its moments. Sometimes it comes across as a serious film and its gets confusing as to what sort of route its taking. I think the viewer needs to sit down, relax and watch it with an open mind, that way you will find yourself enjoying it. The premise of the film is basically about a Naive Mall Cop (Seth Rogan) who suffers from Bi-Polar, his aim in life is to become a Police officer, without going into too much detail and spoiling it, he sets his target of finding a Flasher that is terrorising customers of the Mall to prove to an investigating police officer (Ray Liotta) he is capable of doing his job. Along the way he tries to win the heart of a Make-up Clerk (Anna Faris) with miserable consequences. All in all, many films I have seen recently I have switched off halfway through, not interested in seeing what happens in the end, this I watched to the end. I thought the ending was good, can’t see what other people thought was so bad about it, yes it was a bit harsh, but all was OK. Sorry about the review being a bit short on the info part, but did not want to reveal too much about it.

Cruel and not particularly funny film about a bunch of rather unpleasant people
In response to Jim Emerson’s blog post at the Chicago Sun Times on whether Seth Rogen and Anna Faris’s sex scene is rape, I decided to take a look at the film. To be honest I didn’t want to really watch the film, I don’t care for Seth Rogen and the trailer didn’t appeal to me, but so many of the reviews talked about how it pushed the envelope and wondered if it was really suppose to be funny or just uncomfortable I thought I’d try it to see what all of the fuss was about.

The plot follows Seth Rogen’s character as he tries to capture a flasher who is showing up at the mall where he is head of security. The flasher flashes Anna Faris’s character and she melts down. Rogen who is in love with her decides to capture the guy and also better himself.

They say that comedy is dangerous, but generally its funny. This isn’t funny. Well some of it it is. What was in the trailers. There are also some other bits. Mostly this is the sort of film that seems to be pushing buttons to see if it can provoke you. But where films like Sweet Movie, Irreversible or The Loved One had a point behind them this seems to be pushing buttons to do it. (Sort of like a less clever and more vulgar Sasha Baron Cohen or several people I know who I dislike going to dinner with). I see the humor but I don’t see the laughs. Mostly I feel like I’m being told to laugh rather then actually being shown the joke.

The characters are mostly morons, idiots and mean spirited twits. Other than the girl who secretly loves Rogen’s character almost everyone has some serious flaw that is used for humor or to make us feel uncomfortable. Rogen’s character is a blow hard and bully and gets our sympathy because he’s the main character even though in any other film he’d be the villain who gets shown up in the end.(I suppose points for that). Faris plays an airhead who goes through life drunk and stoned to the point of vomiting. This is the girl of Rogen’s dreams? Obviously thats the joke, unfortunately its not a very clever one.

As I said the humor of the film is cruel and dares you to laugh. The most stunning example is the scene, actually its a single shot of less than a minute, where Rogen takes Faris home after a date and they have sex. Faris is unconscious, or seems to be, with the trail of vomit on the pillow. She lays there almost lifeless until Rogen stops and she, in a half conscious voice, complains that he stopped, at which point he starts up again.

Is it funny? uncomfortably maybe, to some one, I mean the audience around me kind of laughed in an embarrassed sort of way.I do think it was intended to be funny. My question is why is it there since it’s so short and serves no purpose other then as a cheap “laugh” and button pusher (especially if you’re looking for it, which I was). If you cut it it would make no difference since its clear how bad a drunk she is already. Its not worth the effort.

Since the mild controversy was what got me into the theater I have to ask :Is it rape? I hate to say, yea it is.Yea, I know its a movie, a low brow comedy but how can you say it was consensual? As it is seen here its not.

To be honest the “rape” is the least of this films troubles. There are so many other problems, notably the lack of real laughs, that to argue about one scene is over kill (Besides I wasn’t really enjoying the film before that). I mean what happens at the end of the film is even more shocking. I mean I remember saying “what the F$#& just happened.” Its a weird shift in tone that kind of seems like its from another film. (I wish the film wanted to be funny instead of provoking a reaction- actually its not funny but some of the lines that follow it are.) I’m not sure what the point of this film was. I don’t think its really a comedy so why was this film made? I don’t know. Is it a comedy? Maybe I mean maybe the joke is on the audience, maybe they put the film out there as a means of seeing who’ll give them money for a stupid movie thats not what they said it is, in which case this maybe a clever film. But if it is a comedy and not a practical joke then it wasn’t a particularly good one.

Actually I think this is a film that is mean and mean spirited. It was made by filmmakers who have dared us to not like the film by implying that not getting the film means we’re not hip and cool. Its away of not needing to take brick bats since they’ve already dismissed any criticism as being from people “not with it”. I don’t know if I’m with it or not, but I see what they are getting at, I understand the jokes and see where they want the laughs to be and I still think they’ve made a cruel unfunny film.
