Reviews:

Took the wrong route
Laura Galán was convincing in her role and the movie is well directed. Only wish they would have stuck to the thriller genre as so much more could have come out of it. When the story entered horror territory, it just lost its charm, sense of realism and humor as well as its credibility. It also became somewhat expected and a bit of a letdown.

While not perfect, it is still definitely worth a watch if you like a good slow paced thriller with tension along with hints of humor.

Bloody, Chewy but Annoying
Saw this back at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival

“PIGGY” is directed by Carlota Pereda and it’s a story about an overweight teen is bullied by a clique of cool girls poolside while holidaying in her village. During the long walk home, she witnesses her bullies being kidnapped by a complete stranger and creep which will change the rest of her life. Throughout the movie is violent, shocking, and disturbing but in more of just a shock value kind of way. This was also based on a short film with the same name and director previously few years back ago. The movie starts off pretty strong about the issues of bullying and fat shaming before it dives into the disturbing horror aspects. But unfortunately it didn’t offer much but just being shock value.

The violent moments and gory scenes were decent but they never came off as shocking or profound as Pereda was trying to create. Some of the performances were really good but some of them were really bad. The movie tries to become a anti bullying story and revenge story at the same time which makes the movie more confusing and going all over the place. The characters are constantly going all the place and are repetitive throughout the movie. The main character’s family being really idiotic and a two boys who oftenly mock the main character becomes really annoying. Especially when the two boys at one point sexual harasses the main character by pulling her underwear while she was running down the road is clearly obnoxious. The subplot with the main character and a love interest really goes nowhere and has no impact on the story. There are some really dumb choices towards the second and third half of the movie that really makes my eyes roll.

It’s clear that this movie is trying to have messages and moral inside but they all fall apart at the end of the film. Even with a bloody ending, it still felt like nothing really impactful had happened and left me pretty unsatisfied. There are some good moments as there are great production designs, beautiful colorful scenarios, and some pretty intense moments that worked well. But it is overshadowed by it’s messiness. Like a pig getting all dirty again.
