The trio’s whereabouts is still unknown. ‘Production Hell’ combines the original footage of the missing cast and recent interviews from investigators, witnesses and colleagues. The location footage has been contaminated with unexplained sequences, sound effects and blurs the line between fact and fiction. Leave your preconceived ideas of genre behind!
The counter-cinematic devices utilised at the beginning of Production Hell, left me wondering as to its genre; reality, documentary or pure fiction. As the film progressed, I was still confused, but actually enjoyed that fact. It didn’t take me too long to give up trying to work out what it wasn’t and enjoy what it was instead. This film is unconventional, but not so much as to render it unable to be understood. The casting and acting was well done. The candid moments when Tanya did not know she was being filmed and came out with a witty line helped to carry the dialogue along. There were some really funny moments in the film, for example when the Foley Artist was crunching on leaves, “Because that’s his job.” Another moment was when Dale and Tanya get drunk in the tent. That was a nice moment. Also, the pressure built slowly as Dale and Tanya were running out of time get everything they needed for the location scouting job. At first the inter cut interviews were a little confusing to understand, but as the subjects continued to speak juxtaposed with the action as the film developed, it became quite apparent that something sinister had taken place. This also helped with the pace of the film by steering the audience closer to the truth.
The locations were really well thought out and at times beautiful to look at. The music suited the action well too. My one major criticism is of the murderous clown. This character was very reminiscent of Jigsaw from the Saw movie franchise. Maybe a bit more thought could be made into making the killer a bit more unique.
Overall, Production Hell entertained me. It is not your average genre film, but once you leave your preconceived ideas of genre behind, you will be taken on an extremely interesting journey.
