Plot: A young female embezzler arrives at the Bates Motel, which has terrible secrets of its own. Although this version is in color, features a different cast, and is set in 1998, it is closer to a shot-for-shot remake than most remakes, Gus Van Sant often copying Hitchcock’s camera movements and editing, and Joseph Stefano’s script is mostly carried over. Bernard Herrmann’s musical score is reused as well, though with a new arrangement by Danny Elfman and recorded in stereo.

The King of Pointless, Disposable Films
Shockingly, someone once told me to watch this version of Psycho to gain an understanding of the Norman Bates story, to neglect the Alfred Hitchcock original because this was somehow superior.

No. No, it’s not. Not by a long shot.

This is the literal definition of half-assed. It’s a shot-for-shot remake of the original. Not a lot has changed; a few things have been “modernized” and they added Rob Zombie’s Living Dead Girl to the soundtrack (don’t get me wrong; I love Rob Zombie, but that song doesn’t fit in the film at all) and, of course, this film is in color. That’s it.

So, the question is: why does this film exist? It has the same classic score (re-recorded by the genius Danny Elfman; but even he is clearly just grabbing an easy paycheck with this one), the same shots (ruined by the color; black-and-white added an eerie quality to everything, which is lost with this remake). Of course, the actors were fine and they did their best but, with the exception of a few of Vince Vaughn’s scene, it was a straightforward imitation of the original.

This is a soulless sellout, a half-assed product slapped together in an effort to make money. Fortunately, it was a flop, which lets Hollywood know we don’t want this kind of trash “entertainment.” Don’t touch the classics.

For the rest of us, I urge you to skip this movie. If seeing the story play out in black and white is such a massive, unbearable turn-off for you, then I’ll say this: with all due respect, you don’t deserve to know the story of Norman Bates.
