Punk in the south of Africa
If the ending covers quickly the rest of the continent, the movie focuses mostly on the southern tip, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Starting with the Sowetto insurrection, and punk spreading as a music of social criticism amidst the white community, in which the opposition to the social constraints of apartheid lead to the merging of black & white youth, and bands like “National Wake” and others. Although according to the movie, it seems like the post-apartheid bands covered were all of european decent. Then the film makers go to the lesser known historical contexts of mozambique and zimbabwe, then rhodesia, where punk happened during periods of war. Most of the bands are playing ska and reggae, but not allowed on radio and considered as subversive as punk would be. the coverage is shorter, but not as short as the quick coverage of the rest of continent. Although, for the lack of other documentaries on the matter, the movie remains a “must-watch”. Or you can go and check out tien an men 89 records for recording of bands from all-over.
