Reviews:

An endlessly fascinating and compelling story involving Rodriguez, a talented American singer-songwriter that should have been a household name, but instead quickly faded into obscurity. Long rumored to have died under tragic circumstances, his music develops a cult following among the Afrikaner youth. Rebelling against the oppressive and isolationist system of Apartheid, Rodriguez’s music becomes a soundtrack for their lives. The documentary unfolds like a mystery story with unexpected twists and turns along the way. As the audience is taken on this journey, we are introduced to Rodriguez’s songs (including some previously unreleased material) which while reminiscent of Bob Dylan and other artists on the scene in the early 1970s, the music is distinctly his own. A must see documentary for music fans.

This is probably the most enjoyable documentary film I’ve ever seen. It’s about a singer from the 70s whom I’ve never heard of (although I’m old enough) even though he’s clearly a better poet and songwriter than Bob Dylan (yes, I said that and I’m a poet so there’s my credentials). If you know anything about the record industry, and about the reality of discrimination in the United States, then it’s easy to understand how a Mexican singer/song writer of the 70s was ignored by the payola controlled DJs of the time and screwed by the record industry. The low-budget film itself is full of surprises, and the culmination of the search for Sugar Man is totally uplifting and heartwarming. If you love the music genre, this film is a must see – even if it’s only for the delicious sound track.

Long lost gem. Lovely movie and a must for fans of Dylan-esque music
I caught this movie at an advanced screening at the UN during Mandela week and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the movie and even more enthralled to discover this long, lost gem of music. The movie revolves around an up-and-coming Rock’n’roller from the 70s who recorded two albums and then disappeared into obscurity. His music was lost in the US but by a strange coincidence becomes a cult hit in South Africa and becomes a symbol of rebellion for the underground white, anti-apartheid sub-culture. The documentary is a lovely journey of discovery of the south africans who try to find the roots of this enigma and re-discover his music. I won’t spoil too much but for fans of Dylan like music, this might be a long, lost gem and music that perhaps, at least now, deserves more recognition and appreciation.

You gotta see this one…
“Searching for Sugar Man” is an amazingly strange story–the sort of thing that seems much more like fiction than real life. Back in the early 1970s, Sixto Rodriguez (known only as ‘Rodriguez’) signed a record deal and life was looking good. However, despite some big fans in the record industry, this didn’t equate to sales in the US and his album tanked and Rodriquez faded into obscurity…or so you would think. However, during the latter part of the apartheid era in South Africa, his music somehow evolved into an anthem of the opposition–and his anti-establishment lyrics were perfect for this. However, folks in South Africa assumed Rodriguez had died–and lots of rumors of his death abounded. It’s only been in the last part of the 1990s that Rodruguez’ whereabouts were discovered and he became a huge sensation when he went on tour. This film chronicles this bizarre rags to….well rags..story. What’s so interesting about it is Rodriguez himself. In the film, he doesn’t seem to have regrets for the way his life went and seems very humble about his new success. Overall, a wonderfully made and fascinating film–and it comes as no surprise as you watch it that it took the Oscar for Best Documentary (full-length) at this year’s award ceremony. Fascinating throughout and there is certainly NOTHING like it when it comes to documentaries!
