Vastly entertaining horror flick about murderous baboon.
Roddy McDowall plays the professor Sorenson who juices up a baboon with brain serum so he’ll be calmer, unfortunately he makes a mistake and instead of injecting the right serum,he injects the serum that turns him into a bloodthirsty predator.”Shakma” is a much better film than Tom Logan’s awful slasher “The Night Brings Charlie”.It’s full of violent animal action, mostly the baboon attacking and killing medical scientists and the other animals in the lab.”Shakma” offers a nice amount of blood and gore and the killings are pretty brutal. The acting is solid, the score is amazing and the baboon is downright aggressive.Overall this is an immensely enjoyable animal-on-the-loose horror flick that should satisfy genre enthusiasts.Give it a chance.7 out of 10.
Monkey is mad… Monkey is very mad!
“Shakma” is a fundamentally a routine 80s slasher, but since we were at the dawn of a new decennium, and since every possible type of human psychopath had already been the culprit during the previous decade, the creators decided to do something different. Why not replace the masked killer with a hysterical baboon? Not a bad set-up, me thinks!
A male lab-baboon, already the most aggressive primate species, goes totally berserk from all the experimental serums Dr. Sorensen is injecting into his shiny red bottom, and starts bumping off the med school students that are locked inside the college building overnight to play a ridiculous sort of role-play game. Now, I’m all for suspension of disbelief, but the script of “Shakma” is taking it a bit too far. We are seriously to believe that a college professor locks up his students, as well as himself, for the sake of a game? Shouldn’t there be a minimum of safety regulations and possibilities to reach the main entrance? And isn’t there a central fire or security alarm to unlock all doors?
The sequences with Shakma (marvelous role for Typhoon the Baboon) hunting down the students are reasonably tense, and several deaths are unexpected and shocking. Even though most of the bloodshed appears off-screen, it’s hinted that the monkey munches his victims’ faces. There are also many shots of Shakma going ballistic against a closed door, and apparently that’s because the animal trainers were provoking him from the other side. Clever! There are some familiar faces in the cast, like Roddy McDowall (playing another weirdo), Christopher Atkins from “The Blue Lagoon”, and Amanda Wyss from “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Ari Myers is also worth mentioning. I don’t know her, but she looks incredibly sexy in her nerdy princess outfit.
