Synopsis

Watch: Trollflöjten 1975 123movies, Full Movie Online – A production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera “The Magic Flute” is presented, this film which blurs the lines of it as a stage production – not only with aspects of the theater stage shown, but also the occasional shot of the audience members watching it, and the performers going through their backstage routines during intermission – and a movie as the set moves out from the confines of the stage. The actual story concerns Tamino, a prince, falling in love with Pamina solely from seeing her photograph, Pamina’s mother, the Queen of the Night, vowing that Pamina will be his if he rescues her from Sarastro, a demon who has captured her. On behalf of the Queen, three of her attendants, “ladies”, who saved Tamino from a serpent, provide him with a magic flute to entice Pamina, and three child angels, who will act as his guides. The ladies also dispatch the pan-flute playing Papageno, a bird catcher who laments not being married himself, with Tamino, they providing him with magic bells as protection. Tamino will discover that not relayed to him by the Queen and her ladies is as it appears, he and Papageno who will have to go through a trial of enlightenment to reach their desired ends..
Plot: The Queen of the Night enlists a handsome prince named Tamino to rescue her beautiful kidnapped daughter, Princess Pamina, in this screen adaptation of the beloved Mozart opera. Aided by the lovelorn bird hunter Papageno and a magical flute that holds the power to change the hearts of men, young Tamino embarks on a quest for true love, leading to the evil Sarastro’s temple where Pamina is held captive.

Looks and sounds wonderful
Some opera-buff acquaintances of mine have called Ingmar Bergman’s movie of “The Magic Flute” the only good opera film ever made. While I don’t know enough about opera to be able to accurately judge that, this movie is certainly a delightful experience. Sung in Swedish by a cast of photogenic Scandinavians, the film both looks and sounds wonderful.

With its fairy-tale plot and passages of spoken dialogue in addition to singing, “The Magic Flute” is already a very accessible opera. Bergman accentuates this by taking an unpretentious “Opera for Everyone” approach, exemplified by his close-up shots of audience members’ faces as the overture plays. His production mostly has an 18th-century rococo/ Neoclassical look, though there are a few jarringly modern touches, such as writhing dancers in the last scene. Other than that, this seems a pretty faithful (if shortened) version of the opera that captures its comedy as well as its serious themes.

Mozart’s music is both gorgeous and character-appropriate: lyrical arias for aristocratic lovers Tamino and Pamina, powerful coloratura for the vengeful Queen of the Night, folksy melodies for the bird-catcher Papageno. Papageno, a lovable Everyman type, is probably my favorite character in the opera, and Hakan Hagegard does the role justice. Ingmar Bergman’s movies are known for their focus on human psychology, and even though “The Magic Flute” is a fantasy, the cast members make their actions believable. They do not just stand and sing like divas; they become tangible human beings.

This collaboration across the centuries between two great artists, Mozart and Bergman, yielded a lovely result. Highly recommended for novice opera-watchers and serious opera buffs alike–though I’m sure many opera fans have already seen this treat of a movie.

Ingmar Bergman does Opera
Ingmar Bergman believed in art without borders. He was both a genius of film making and theatrical performances, but in many of his productions he brought elements from other arts – music, poetry and paintings. ‘The Magic Flute’ realized in 1975 is his deep exploration of the classical opera. Bergman takes over Mozart’s last opera, sublimates its content and adds more than a touch of Scandinavian flavor to the humanist and masonic message of the story, and creates one of the best adaptation of operas to cinema screens. ‘The Magic Flute’ which was originally produced for TV and which does not even mention the name of the director in the credits is a bright facet of the multiple personalities of the great director, and probably one of the best filmed operas ever made.

A curtain raises at the beginning of the movie and we are in a opera house. This is actually the theater in the 18th-century Drottningholm Palace, located on an island of the Stockholm Archipelago that the Swedes proudly call their national Versailles. The heavenly music of the Overture is played, but we do not see the orchestra – we see faces in the audience, falling or already being under the spell of Mozart’s music. They are so different, and so is their living of the sublime music. This masterpiece, and any work of true art has as many different incarnations as people who enjoy them. More time is spent on a beautiful little girl (who happens to be Bergman’s own daughter). ‘The Magic Flute’ can be a piece of music for children, but it tells no pure fairy tale story. Under the pretext of a fairy tale Mozart has hidden a story that describes a deadly fight between Good and Evil, between Ration and Darkness, between Freedom and Tyranny. It’s a love story, but love needs to be conquered with pain, and the lovers need courage and character in order to meet each other and to prevail. ‘The Magic Flute’ is also no conventional and no linear story. A good queen and the beautiful fair ladies in her entourage will change under our eyes to become the forces of evil. The tyrant who abducted the young and beautiful princess will prove to be an enlightened ruler. Things are not what they seem to be, magic controls every aspect of life and destiny, and true love is conquered with courage and wit.

The music is sublime, and so is the singing of the Swedish team. Singing in Swedish never bothered me, it actually gave the music at some moments in time Wagner-esque tones. Visuals are very respectful for the theatrical techniques and rules in Mozart’s time. Bergman expands the space of the stage, inviting us, spectators to join and wander freely in the deep spaces of the theater, just to find ourselves back in our armchairs by the end. Many of the spectators will have the reflex of applauding by the end, so realistic the staging and the acting succeed to be. Bergman’s ‘Magic Flute’ is a trip in enchanted territory.
