**A family with artistic vision, well, almost!**

This is one of the first titles to attach with the upcoming Oscars. Yes, they also praised the Adam Sandler’s performance, which saw a series stumble in the recent years. Besides, I believed in this director. The film also had Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman. All the fine actors with a fine filmmaker, this is one of the best dramas of the year. Not a family drama, though. And it is about almost a dysfunctional family. This kind of themes is always so fun to watch, and So I had a decent time with it.

Just a week away for their father’s artwork show, the two step-brothers and a sister had arrived. They have come individually, then one of them learns about news of selling the property and soon protests. Then the other brother’s lunch date with his father does not go as planned. Later an unexpected emergency brings them all to unity. Following that, how the story ends are told in the rest of the running time.

Definitely a good film, but not that awesome kind. Only the cast makes it so precious, and everything else are almost seen in other similar flicks. Sandler has been doing some good roles recently, but this one was even better. It’s just a different kind of comedy which still suits him. Nothing to say about Stiller and the rest of the cast. They all as good as each other. Recommended!

Funnier than expected, especially after I have previously been quite annoyed by both Sandler and Stiller in other films. The family event is sketched with much recognizable and humorous detail.

As close to real life as it gets…
I am surprised by other reviews of this film, but I think understanding this work depends wholly on whether you have ever lived with or known intimately a narcissist. It may not be pretty to watch, but it’s not pretty to live either. And this movie nails it. It may be a small percentage of the population that can truly understand the subtleties of this movie and appreciate them. The skill it took to capture the complexity of these characters and to make it believable is remarkable. Baumbach paints in detail the devastated landscape of a narcissist’s world. Hoffman’s character displays perfectly how a narcissist’s personality cannot and will not make room for anyone else’s experience or emotions, especially his children’s. Every conversation eventually returns to him: his needs, his opinions, his preferences, his ego, his career, his art, his place in the world. People have remarked that Hoffman is tedious and exhausting in this film. Yes. Because that is exactly the point. And Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Elizabeth Marvel are brilliant as the relational afterthoughts of his all-consuming ego. I would recommend this film to anyone. Not because you’ll feel great after watching it but because it dares to tackle a deeply complex human subject and succeeds. And isn’t that the point of art anyway?

A Wonderful Family Dramedy
I’m not sure who the morons are who couldn’t sit thorough this film, but too bad for your brain damaged mind due to over saturated computer graphic driven movies. This is a film, and it’s a gem. The story is of a semi-famous sculpture at the twilight of his career. Being honored at a school he teaches, his estranged sons and (less we forget daughter) are coming home to attend it.

The film starts with an amazing father/daughter moment between Eliza (Grace Van Patten) and Danny (Adam Sandler). What makes this INCREDIBLY touching is that Eliza isn’t a terrible millenial child. She is a mature thoughtful doting on her father person. Who is about to attend college and can’t seem to abandon her lost father. She’s obviously strong willed yet incredibly concerned about his life (shouldn’t this be the opposite…nope!). She is so independent..she makes semi-pornographic films as a student filmmaker and passes it as art, as father, grandfather and aunt look on, uncertain if to continue to support the creative gene in the family.

Eventually, the dysfunctional piece-mealed family does unite, in the way only deeply strained inconsistent families do. And the common thread is a somewhat bitter art father Harold Meyerowitz (Dustin Hoffman) who can’t face his failures in how he raised his children. Very much in the vein of a Robert Benton type film, it is bittersweet in its cantankerous unlikable male lead (think Paul Newman in “Nobody’s Fool.”) I love this film. Director Noah Baumbach has done something I didn’t realize could still be done in this trash heap of spectacle movies…he touches human interaction at the core details. Bravo!
