Better than Open Water….
Has similar premise as Open Water but is done a lot better. The characters are a lot better (no endless bickering for 3/4 of the movie) and the shark is both a real threat and clearly seen throughout the movie. This was the movie i was hoping Open Water would be.

The film is not fast paced or action orientated with all the attacks being quick but impactful. We have a lot of pov shots at water level and a views of under the water to slowly build the tension. I found this more than effective.

The direction is tight and the acting is decent. The shark itself seems to be real footage of a great white mixed in with the actors and it works really well. In fact i would say this is one if not the only shark film that does this seamlessly.

Without a doubt The Reef is one of the best shark films ever and i highly recommend it to anyone that loves animal attacks films or sharks. SYFY should take note on how to do a animal attack film right by watching this film.

The Ray Boundy & Danny Thorpe homage
Intense dramatisation of real-life events finds a quintet stranded atop their capsized yacht having to make the impossible decision to either remain with the sinking vessel, or swim the twelve miles to a rocky outcrop so distant, it’s not even visible. Four of the stricken sailors elect to swim, one remains behind on the upended wreck. The presence of a large, mutilated sea turtle leads the quartet to suspect they may not be the only carnivores in the vicinity. What happens thereafter is, while predictable, still suspenseful and frightening to contemplate.

While there’s a brief and bittersweet romantic prelude, the film maintains its focus and delivers the thrills with minimal melodrama. The acting is not especially remarkable, but the cinematography and shark footage/attack effects are impressive.

Inspired by the Ray Boundy 1983 events (one of the attacks in this film appears to be a recreation of one of the actual reported events) there’s also another real-life event on which this is probably based. In 2000, Danny Thorpe disappeared following a maritime disaster. His mate swam for shore and survived, but no trace of Danny was ever found after he remained clinging to debris rather than swim the gauntlet, for fear of being attacked. His death was attributed to a shark, although this was never formally confirmed. Dialogue and post script in the film suggest there’s a character who appears based on this event.

Akin to “Open Water”, “Shark Kill” and director Trauki’s croc film “Black Water”, this taut, economical thriller is geared for maximum audience interaction and should keep you on terra firma indefinitely.
