Reviews:

Very good, sadly ignored, teen movie of the 1980s.
This is a teen comedy from the 1980s, every bit as good as anything made by John Hughes in those days (Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, etc.).

The plot: our hero, Jerry, is assigned by the school newspaper to interview the new kid at school. The new kid, Buddy, is a big thug with an attitude. To make his reputation, Buddy bullies and intimidates Jerry, and tells Jerry that, come three o’clock, he is going to beat him up. Jerry spends the rest of the day trying to get out of participating in the fight.

The story is full of the usual parodies of teen-aged stereotypes, but they are somehow more believable and human than the characters in most films of this genre. The protagonist, for example, suffers from under-confidence resulting from being hypoglycemic. The story is all about him overcoming his under-confidence (a process we all go through in high school), which is a really common plot in teen movies. What comes through in this film is that *all* of the students are going through the same process. The cool, spooky girl next door turns out not to be so cool, underneath. The hero’s buddy tries to help in the struggle, but gets sick of him and abandons him. The villainous tough ends up feeling ashamed of himself. These comic characters stick with you because they are so much like real teenagers: naive, under-confident, and overreaching.

An Underrated,Hilarious Teen Comedy. One Of The Best Teen Films Of The 80s And Of All Time.
Three O’Clock High is one of the best Teen films from the 80s and of all time that combines Funny Comedy, great cast, excellent direction and an amazing soundtrack. This is an hilarious film that is underrated and deserves more love.

Three O’Clock tells the story of high school nerd Jerry Mitchell(Casey Siemaszko)who has been hired to write a school newspaper article on new student Buddy Revell(Richard Tyson),who is rumored to be a total psycho. After a chance meeting between Jerry and Buddy, with Jerry unfortunately touching Buddy(Buddy doesn’t liked to be touched)Buddy has challenged Jerry to a fight after school at three o’clock and unfortunately for Jerry it’s going to be one of those days. Will Jerry accept the challenge and face Buddy or will Jerry try to escape Buddy’s wrath?

Three O’Clock High is a great Teen film from the 80s that is underrated and not many people have heard of or seen. I think the reason Three O’Clock is underrated is because it came out at the tail end of the popularity of Teen films in the 80s and went unnoticed when it was released. But thankfully overtime Three O’Clock High gained a Cult Following since it’s release and it’s well-deserved. What makes Three O’Clock a great Teen film and so hilarious is that it takes the concept from the Western classic High Noon and moves the concept from a Western town to high school where instead of a sheriff battling outlaws a high school nerd has to battle a school bully. In a way Three O’Clock is a hybrid of a High School movie and a Western film this time instead of Western town,Cowboys or lawmen and Outlaws it’s in the hallways of a High School with a nerd and bully at odds with each other,High School cliques and teachers and school administrators. The Western influence on display with this film and viewers will notice the Western overtones as the film goes on. What I love about Three O’Clock High and other Teen films from the 80s is that the film creates it’s own world with funny and crazy situations whether it’s Jerry dealing with Buddy, other students or teachers and trying to get out the fight with Buddy at all costs. In Three O’Clock High has weird and bizarre things that are excepted and nothing is questioned. It’s like a High School version of Martin Scorsese’s After Hours. The fact that the film takes place in almost one full day adds to the film and gives the film great suspense and tension because as a viewer you never know what’s going to happen or when because throughout the film there are shots of clocks all over and realize that time is running out on Jerry. The suspense adds to the laughs. The brilliant photography from Barry Sonnenfield is one of the things that sets Three O’Clock from other Teen Films from the 80s,with Sonnenfield greatly using wide and low angle shots,close-ups and giving the film a beautiful and visually stunning atmosphere setting the tone for the film. It’s interesting that Sonnenfield did the photography for this film and Raising Arizona the same year and if you look at both films they both look similar in the way they are both shot. The main character Jerry is someone we can all relate to in this film because we know he doesn’t want to fight Buddy and he is trying to do anything to get out of it and the things he does to get out of it tests his morals and what happens to him while trying get out of the fight is funny and truly insane. Buddy Revell is a classic Teen film villain because Buddy is menacing and frightening where you feel like Buddy could be anywhere at anytime roaming the school halls stalking Jerry and that no one can stop him. While Buddy is the villain of the film Buddy’s actions and character are very ambiguous will make viewers ask this question about Buddy:is Buddy a bully or just a screwed up teen who wants to be left alone? I think it adds to the mystery of the character. The final 20-30 minutes of the film are funny, great and is filled with thrills and excitement. The ending will have you cheering at the screen.

The whole cast does great in their roles. Casey Siemaszko is excellent as Jerry, bring likability and laughs to the performance. Richard Tyson is frightening and menacing as Buddy Revell, one of the best villains in High School films. Anne Ryan is wonderful as Franny,Jerry’s friend and unrequited love interest. Stacey Glick is great as Brei,Jerry’s sister. Jonathan Wise does a good job as Vincent,Jerry’s best friend. Jerry Tambor is fun and memorable as Mr. Rice,a teacher. Liza Morrow is good and sexy as Karen,Jerry’s crush. Charles Macaulay and Mitch Pileggi give funny performances as Assistant Principal Voytek Dolinski and security guard Duke. John P. Ryan gives a great performance as Principal O’Rourke. Phillip Baker Hall(Detective Mulvahill),Caitlin O’Heaney(Miss Farmer)and Mike Jolly(Craig)give good performances as well. Also lookout for a cameo by Yeardley Smith the voice of Lisa Simpson on The Simpsons who plays a cheerleader in the film.

The direction by Phil Joanou is brilliant, with Joanou always moving the camera and using low and high angle shots, close ups and keeping the film moving at a great pace. Great direction by Joanou.

The soundtrack by Tangerine Dream is amazing and matches the tone and energy of the film. Wonderful score. The theme song by Jim Walker(Something To Remember Me By)is fantastic and memorable and fits in with the film. Great song.

In final word,if you love Teen Films, especially ones from the 80s,I highly suggest you see Three O’Clock High,an underrated Teen classic from the 80s that you can watch again and again. Highly Recommended. 10/10.
