Really bad story and script
I wanted to like this movie because I like the two leads but the story was soooo bland. I watched all of it which was painful but I was just hoping it would get better.Unfortunately, it never did. These leads have to learn to turn down bad scripts and save us from these dumb storylines.
Learning the hard way
‘Where Your Heart Belongs’ is the first 2022 Hallmark film and the film that starts off the New Year New Movies block. Have always been on the fence with both Jen Lilley and Christopher Russell. Lilley can be good in the right role, but when her character is unlikeable and poorly written (which has been the case more than once) it really works against her. Russell can be very charming when his character is written well, but when not he can be too bland and introverted (it does have to be said that his acting has come on a long way since first seeing him).Really was hoping that ‘Where Your Heart Belongs’ would be a lot better than the reviews indicated, with reviewers that this reviewer respects and often agreed with slating it. There have been times where this viewer has liked some Hallmark films less than others and others where they have not been that bad, but ‘Where Your Heart Belongs’ really is that bad. A really dismal start for Hallmark’s 2022 output and made me dread what was to come. Luckily Hallmark did make some above average and more films in 2022.
There are a few good things. The best thing about it is the sparkling performance of Jill Morrison, her character is refreshing and is the only interesting and likeable character in the film.
Did also find the production values well done, the scenery is lovely.
However, everything else is poor at best and beyond awful at worst. Absolutely agree with everybody that has slated Lilley’s performance, which is a contender for her worst. It was embarrassing watching her over-compensate to the extent she does here, where she comes over as really neurotic and wild. Her line delivery is very garbled from talking too fast and practically screamed throughout. She has played quite a lot of unlikeable characters, but calling her character unlikeable here is being far too generous. Actually found her beyond intolerable, have rarely seen arrogance and selfishness this overdone. Russell doesn’t fare as badly, but his character later comes over as too naive and passive and did find Russell too bland and ill at ease. He and Lilley have no connection in any shape or form in a very underwritten and erratically paced romance, got the sense that they didn’t like each other and they are also very mismatched.
Nelson Wong is also very annoying. Of the characters, only Morrison’s is interesting or likeable. All the others are irritating or dull, with some vague at best motivations. The script is incredibly weak, it never sounds natural and is incredibly cheesy and soapy. It also goes well overboard on the hostile banter, of which there is far too much of and it comes over as really forced and cruel. The story is very thin and there is absolutely nothing new, it also drags and has no charm. Worst of all, it is full of contrivances and unrealistic coincidences and the ending is rushed and makes no sense. The music is unmemorable, and there could have been a lot less of it in volume and how often it appears.
Concluding, dismal. 3/10.
