Do you love me today?
The Taiwanese movie “Ming tian ji de ai shang wo” was shown in the U.S. with the title “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? (2013). The film was written and directed by Arvin Chen.Richie Ren stars as Weichung, a 30-something optician. Weichung has been married for nine years to Fen, played by the lovely Mavis Fan. They have an adorable six-year-old son. However, Weichung lived the gay lifestyle before he was married, and a chance encounter with a handsome airline steward draws him back into the gay community.
(There’s a secondary plot about Weichung’s sister, Mandy, who may or may not be willing to marry her fiancée. It’s not much.)
The movie is billed as a romantic comedy, based mostly on the efforts of a group of gay guys who orbit around the protagonists. However, if you look at it more closely, the film is really a sad depiction of a man whose attempts to deny his gay orientation have apparently failed. This leaves him, his wife, and his child in an extremely difficult situation.
We saw this film at the Little Theatre as part of Image Out–The Rochester LGBT Film Festival. It will work very well on the small screen.
Role confusion, out of date
Arvin Chen wrote and directed this featherweight little farce that lack substance and really is not all that entertaining. Weichung (Richie Ren) is and optometrist who has been married to Fen (Mavis Fan) for nine years in what likely was to be a ‘cover’ marriage: Weichung is gay and still ‘looking’. At the point where Fen is asking to start another child (they have one 6 year old son) the fragile thread becomes taut. Weichung meets a handsome airline steward and that sort of tips the scales. There is a subplot concerning Weichung’s sister Mandy (Kimi Hsia) that never takes off except that her incipient wedding brings on board a gay wedding photographer Stephen (Lawrence Ko) who jolts Weichung about his balancing lifestyle. In the end we are left with an old song sung before and better. Times have changed and films like this seem a bit moldy. Grady Harp, August 14
