Carefully plotted scheme
If the loose ends in the story of A Housekeeper’s Revenge were as carefully plotted as Fay Masterson’s plot against Kathryn Newton this might have rated higher. Honestly I couldn’t see what Masterson’s problem was.

Newton’s dad has married himself a young trophy wife and he’s honeymooning with her. Leaving the daughter in the care of housekeeper Masterson, Masterson is nursing a big time grudge against Newton. She blames Newton for the suicide of her son who was a picked on nerd in school. In fact she was one of the few who treated him decently.

It’s here where the story is vague, too vague for my taste. That Masterson is deranged no doubt, but just if and how much culpability Newton has is not clear at all.

Some good performances topped Masterson, Newton, and Kenton Duty as her ex-boyfriend are sadly wasted in a mediocre film.

The Kindness of Strangers
In high school, young Laura Blackwell showed kindness to the nerd Craig Carter, who was taunted by his fellow classmates. She sat with him for lunch in the cafeteria and took and interest in his drawing and math skills. But Laura was unaware that Craig lived in a fantasy world enabled by a damaged mother. He eventually took his life, and the mother, Maria Carter, mistakenly blamed Laura for the death.

“The Maid” (a.k.a., “A Housekeeper’s Revenge”) opens with Laura, who is now in college, as she is harassed with someone who has great animosity towards her. While attending her father’s wedding to Elise Grey as the maid of honor, Laura meets the new maid named Colleen. Little does she know that Colleen is in fact Maria Carter, who has launched a diabolical and vindictive attack on Laura.

Though the film is extremely unpleasant in the diabolical machinations of Colleen, it nonetheless hits all the right notes in the character of Laura. An exceedingly well-balanced young woman, Laura sets aside her reservations about her father marrying a woman twenty years her junior and comes to appreciate Elise.

Laura also reunites with her high school sweetheart, Matthew, who was reluctant to engage in a long-distance relationship after Laura began school in Florida after her years growing up in California. But Matthew has matured and proves to be one of the heroes of the film.

The filmmakers succeeded in developing a well-rounded portrait of Colleen, who actually garners a degree of sympathy as a lost soul. It is unfortunate that both Colleen and her emotionally fragile son never recognized the strength of character of Laura in order to accept the special gift of the kindness of strangers.
