delightful movie
I first saw this movie in 1979. I loved it then and it has not lost any of it’s magic 37 years later. Lane and Bernard are sweet and captivating and of course Sir Laurence Olivier gives another wonderful performance in his long distinguished career. Like many who saw this movie so many years ago, I often wondered what ever became of the young actor who portrayed Daniel. Apparently he decided that acting was not a profession he would continue to pursue as I have recently discovered, ashame that he did’nt do more. The award winning score to this movie by Georges DeLarue is probably the movies greatest triumph, for without it the story may not have come across with quite the power that it did. This movie is a real blessing!
A few white lies add to the charm of this sparkling tale
I must admit I’m a romantic at heart so how could I not like a film that puts me in the mood for a legendary kiss under the Bridge of Sighs in beautiful Venice.Dreams can come true it seems particularly if you can help them along with a stretch of the imagination and the invention of the most unlikely possibilities. None of the characters in this film are truly honest with each other, but they are united in one respect…to reach Venice, come what may.
Thelonius Bernard and Diane Lane play the young lovers who believe in the legend of the Bridge of Sighs. They are both juvenile Award Winners for their acting ability. Thelonius has a thoroughly cheeky style as he bounces through every scene and the music (another award winner) certainly adds zest to the cheery atmosphere.
Laurence Olivier as a cunning old gentleman makes up stories about his life and deceives the young couple at every turn as he leads them through Verona towards their final adventure in a gondola.
The story itself is a flimsy one as we watch a couple of runaway children pursued by parents and police on a race across Italy. However there are some delightful little cameos e.g. at the railway station where Thelonius tries to steal a kiss from Diane while a poker-faced woman gives him a withering stare. And in an art gallery two teenage girls gawk at a nude male statue. “Have you seen a real one?” asks one of the other.
It’s a very light-hearted happy film that I am sure you will recommend to others. As for Venice itself, it’s so beautiful the sooner you go there the better. The Bridge of Sighs is easy to find near San Marco’s Square where the bells ring out and eternal love is assured.
