He makes things worse when he talks down a colleague after a promise to talk him up. The colleague handles things badly and takes the radio station into his own hands, literally, by taking them all hostage. Envisioning all his action heroes in his head, Alan is going to save the day by becoming a go-between for the Scotland Yard. His method though will put himself and others in harm’s way because Alan Partridge just can’t keep his mouth shut..
Plot: When famous DJ Alan Partridge’s radio station is taken over by a new media conglomerate, it sets in motion a chain of events which see Alan having to work with the police to defuse a potentially violent siege.

Like it? I loved it!
First things first… I hear, for some people, Alan Partridge is the epitome of irritating. I’ve heard him described as one of the most hated TV characters of all time. However, with only this movie for reference, I have to say I strongly disagree. True, he is a bit full of himself and has a tendency to say inappropriate things… but who doesn’t? He’s certainly FAR more appealing than the ‘young and hip’ brigade that want to fire him after they’ve taken over his Norwich radio station. Was his persona here toned down from his TV shows? I haven’t a clue… he just comes across as a slightly dotty, but ultimately charming middle aged bloke.

There’s are lots of little laughs everywhere, and Steve Coogan is a master of understated wit. Keep your ear trained for some of the best gags. Colm Meaney also makes an impact as the Irish DJ, who must be the most non-threatening hostage taker in history. But being such a fan of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, it’s hard to imagine him as anything but the bumbling Miles O’Brien. Oh well, that’s my problem. Another laudable aspect is the hearkening back to the old ways of telecasting: when you could say stuff on the airways, without every word being scanned by a committee. AND you could play music that wasn’t on the ‘approved’ list.

Effective cinema outing for Partridge
When a provincial English radio station is taken over and DJ Pat Farrell loses his job, he invades the station with a shotgun and fellow DJ Alan Partridge becomes the go-between with the authorities in order to negotiate the hostages’ release.

This might seem like a straightforward drama until you register the name Alan Patridge, played by Steve Coogan. Non-Brits might know Coogan for the many small parts he has played in successful international movies – Tropic Thunder, Night At The Museum 2, Percy Jackson 1, Ruby Sparks – but British viewers will know him as Alan Partridge, a character he has played on radio and TV, in a variety of formats, for 20 years or more.

I must confess that I’m not a big Partridge fan. The character – which certainly has longevity – is unsympathetic (indeed, is built on unsympathetic qualities) as a result of which the humour which has followed him through stints as a sports commentator, chat show host, general TV pundit, all the way down to his current position is a DJ on the edge of unemployment at a poxy little radio station out in the sticks, is fundamentally uncomfortable, and I have some difficulties with humour in that area.

Partridge is small-minded and self-serving, completely lacking in social graces, and prone to saying exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time. And those qualities, which I find unattractive in a half hour TV sitcom, actually work very well when they are plotted into a full length movie. This film is good, with a number of laugh out loud moments. It may not travel very well, though.
