MAMAN TITINE has lived alone with her five children ever since her husband JOSEPH, a Jewish post office employee, set off for Paris with forged papers to find work. Maman Titine tries to hide the fact she’s worried # especially so that she can ease the childhood problems of her son MEYER, an intelligent, proud and nonconformist young boy who loves her in a jealous way. When financial trouble and loneliness threaten to finally get the better of her she travels to occupied Paris in an attempt to persuade Joseph to return. He has to remain, however: he cannot earn a living in war-torn Algiers. Meanwhile Meyer is growing up; he has his first sexual experiences, and tries as best he can to keep the family fed. When Joseph returns in 1945 Meyer, who fought on De Gaulle’s side at the age of nearly 18, goes to France. He studies medicine there and becomes a famous surgeon..
Plot: During a happy evening, the famous professor Levy, one of the masters of cardiac surgery, collapses, struck by a heart attack. His whole life comes back to him, and in particular his childhood, enlightened by a loving and beloved mother.

Roger Hanin was born in 1925 in Algiers; his formative years are described in this film. Meyer Lévy at 12 is fiercely independent and sure of his identity as a Jew and a Communist. The life of the Jewish community in this French colony is described with much affection. Mme. Schwarzkopf and her carpets are almost the only unpleasant episode in the Lévy family’s life. Poverty dogs their daily existence, a five-franc coin is hard to come by.

Hanin had an undistinguished career in the French film industry: he is mainly remembered for playing le Tigre (a sort of James Bond type) in two films by Chabrol. Soleil will not be remembered, but there is a compelling performance by Sophia Loren who never puts a foot wrong when she is playing the mother of a large brood. Philippe Noiret as the father is effective in a couple of scenes. Nicolas Olczyk plays young Meyer very well.
