Everyone’s favorite teacher, Mr. Simon (Ed Harris), pairs Andy with the school’s biggest outcast and social pariah, Stanley, aka “Big G” (Alexander Walters), on a critical term project. Sporting thick orange hair, a head too big for his body and ears too big for his head, “Big G” has been the object of ridicule since grade school. Before long, Andy will learn that there was truly a method behind Mr. Simon’s madness as to why he teamed these two up. As the story unfolds, Mr. Simon finds himself the target of a malicious rumor after Principal Kelner (Amy Madigan) suspends a school bully for brutally beating up a female classmate whom he thinks has “cooties.” When Andy watches “Big G” fearlessly confront the school bully, a series of events are triggered which change the lives of both young men – and their teacher – forever. Much to Andy’s surprise, “Big G” is a brilliant, kind, tolerant and decent human being who has more dignity than anyone Andy has ever encountered..

Somebody watched a lot of “The Wonder Years”
What the heck just happened? The WWE logo comes on, and a serious drama comes on. Is this a new effort to broaden out the WWE brand? This is a coming-of-age story of 12 year old Andy Nichol (Chase Ellison) in 1965. He’s a normal kid who’s trying to survive school when Mr. Simon (Ed Harris) forces Andy with the school’s biggest outcast the quiet giant red head Stanley (Alexander Walters).

Writer/Director Michael Pavone must have binge watched “The Wonder Years”. This was filled with all the clichés, all the bully, all the first love drama, and even has the iconic older-self narration. Everything is jammed in there that it felt much more derivative than it needed to be. However to say something is derived from an icon like “The Wonder Years” isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

A Cliché ridden waste of Ed Harris’ talent.
Oh where to start? The hackneyed “The wonder years” commentary, the wise and kind teacher unwilling to compromise his principles, the cavalcade of set upon nerds, the unrelentingly violent and stupid bullies, the wisecracking fat kid, the overbearing father, the always sensible mother, the shy nice guy with a crush on the popular pretty girl – will he get her? won’t he get her? well I won’t spoil it for you. I could go on and on believe me, one cliché follows upon another tired old cliché. And another thing – the main kids hair is too long for 1965 …… I know it’s not important but like the rest of the film it’s annoying. In the end young Andy learns a few of life’s lessons; don’t judge people by there appearance, stand up to bullies, be true to your principles etc,etc, we’ve seen it all before in a million other coming of age movies. Ed Harris’ Mr. Simon is the best thing about this film. He’s just so darn likable and dignified ….. damn those bigoted parents! Can’t they see that this guy is the greatest teacher ever!!!! Anywho don’t bother – If you want a coming of age flick go watch Goonies again.
