On the A-list of B pictures
Of course The Monster That Challenged the World is slowly paced. With a budget of about twenty dollars there’s a lot of filler. But what little budget there is, is well used in creating a great animatronic monster.

The story is basic but well-structured and it works. I can watch this one over and over without wanting to throw things at the screen or yell at the characters for doing stupid things. My intelligence is more seriously insulted by modern horror films and their idiot protagonists than it ever is by The Monster That Challenged the World.

Among low-budget sci-fi flicks of the 1950s, The Monster That Challenged the World ranks near the top!

Salty Snails. They Slime, they Suck They Challenge
Few things in this hideous and God-forsaken world are as entertaining and charming to watch as monster movies made in the 1950’s and, oh dear Lord, is “The Monster that Challenged the World” another gloriously beautiful example to state this theory, or what? To the vast majority of people out there this probably qualifies as a bad film, but if you’re into nostalgic Sci-Fi, “The Monster ” features every tiniest aspect you could possibly be looking for. Like it was almost obligatory in these golden fifties, the movie opens with an atmospheric and stern voice-over informing us about some sort of unusual environmental phenomenon (in this case the Salton Sea in California) and immediately continues with the inevitable earthquake to stir things up. The earthquake liberates some anciently buried mollusk creatures and the permanently radioactive seawater – courtesy of military experiments from a Navy base nearby – promptly causes them to grow to enormous proportions. Their first victims are a couple of Navy parachutists, whose bodies float back to the sea surface completely drained of all vital body fluids. Lieutenant Commander Twillinger (Tim Holt) and the entire Navy base take the problem dead serious, as there might be several of these ravenous creatures and chances are high that they will find their way to international waters. The first half of the film is undoubtedly the most entertaining. Within half an hour, the over-sized escargots already make a handful of victims and, for once, it doesn’t take the rest of the film before everyone acknowledges the enemy to be a giant sea monster (which is obvious since they all witnessed and narrowly survived an attack). The second half is much slower and even slightly tedious because the script focuses on the military operation to exterminate the monsters rather than on further attacks. Naturally, there’s even some space left for the developing love-story between the brusque Navy commander and the cherubic and recently widowed doctor’s assistant. The title is a bit exaggeratedly grotesque and the script contains a certain number of illogicalness (for example, how is it possible that a 7-year-old child can freely walk in and out of a military science lab?), but overall this is a very amiable B-movie accomplishment. The big and seemingly glass-eyed snail creatures are quite impressive and the underwater footage – albeit shot in a massive tank – is endearing. Tim Holt and Audrey Dalton are good as the leads, while some of the insignificant supportive characters provide a bit of welcome comical breaks, like the eccentric librarian and the morgue assistant who keeps his sandwiches fresh amidst the cadavers. All these monster-mania movies turn 50 years old nowadays, but they were build to provide everlasting entertainment!
